“Caring about your personal safety
translates into every aspect of your life,” says Kathleen Baty, CEO of
SafetyChick Enterprises. “Learning to live with strength, courage, and
common sense is the greatest gift that you can give yourself.” With this
motto, The SafetyChick was born.
An author, journalist, and
motivational speaker, Kathleen Baty was the victim of a kidnap attempt at
knifepoint by an obsessive stalker.
“After fifteen years of living
like a hunted animal, I came to the realization that living weak and in
fear was going to destroy me if I didn’t turn the negative into a
positive. That meant becoming proactive.” Baty decided to use her hard-won
knowledge and trial-by-fire skills as a lesson for women everywhere. “If I
could prevent one woman from becoming a crime victim, it would all be
worth it.”
Teaming with US Congressman Ed Royce, Baty set out to
change the system. Within a few months, the two had played a key role in
passage of the first national anti-stalking law. “For the first time ever,
we actually have a law that prevents a crime from happening. I think it’s
wonderful that law enforcement now has the tools to prevent a rape, a
murder, a violent crime..” In the years since, Baty’s reputation has grown
as a dedicated and articulate victims' rights advocate—she is known to
millions through her appearances on news programs such as Today, Larry
King Live, Good Morning America and ABC World News Tonight, as well as
features in publications such as People, Time, Glamour, Redbook, Women's
Day and USA Today.
The author of A Girl’s Gotta Do What A Girl’s
Gotta Do: The Ultimate Guide to Living Safe and Smart (2003) and the
President and CEO of SafetyChick Enterprises—a company dedicated to
staging empowering informational workshops and seminars, and to
developing, licensing, and merchandising of personal safety products
including the SafetyChick Kit™. “A few years ago, I wrote content for an
e-commerce company that sold personal safety products. In that time I
learned about all the great personal safety/self-defense products that are
out there, and decided to create a kit that contains products I believe
cover every aspect of personal safety.”
Baty has appeared
nationwide as a keynote speaker before law enforcement agencies,
legislative bodies and women's groups. She has been a featured speaker at
the National Association of Threat Assessment Professionals Conference,
alongside Congressman Royce and former Los Angeles Police Chief Willie
Williams. She helped create the country's first stalking telecourse on
stalking for law enforcement, and has spoken at the Los Angeles SWAT
yearly training seminar. She has worked with the National Center for
Victims of Crime to support victims' rights legislation, and has privately
counseled countless victims of violent crime. Baty currently hosts
personal safety segments on FOX’s America’s Most Wanted with John
Walsh.
The SafetyChick lives in California with her husband, former
NFL football player Greg Baty, and their three hip SafetyDudes.
